A   Cigarette smoking is VERY DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH

When people smoke cigarettes they breathe in smoke that is a dangerous mixture produced by burning tobacco and other added materials. This smoke makes them feel relaxed. However, the smoke has a material that is made up of more than 4000 chemicals. This material is called TAR. 60 of these chemicals found in TAR are known to cause cancer on a person that smokes a cigarette. That is why it is repeatedly said that Cigarette smoking is very dangerous.

Smoking CAUSES CANCER

WHAT is CANCER?

Cancer is a disease of the cells of the body that makes cells multiply and damage other tissues and organs of the body.  Most cancers do not have medicines.

Smoking causes cancers of the lungs.

Smoking causes cancers of the throat, mouth, and the oesophagus (the tube that takes food and oxygen to the stomach and the lungs)

Smoking also helps the formation of cancers in other organs of the body such as the kidney, the stomach, the blood etc. and affects the heart.

The truth is that cigarette smokers die younger because of all the dangers smoking brings than those who do not smoke.

Smoking is very dangerous and addictive.

What is addictive? When doing something becomes a habit that you can not stop, it is called addiction. When someone smokes regularly and he/she can not stop doing it, it becomes an addiction. This is very damaging to the health of the person.

Most people begin smoking as teenagers. Usually because other teen friends, classmates or schoolmates are doing it and they think it is the best way to be recognized by these teenagers and the best way to become popular. Some also begin smoking out of curiosity. Just to see what it is all about and what it feels like. However the problem is it does not stop at trying. Because smoking is addictive… the chemicals inside the smoke will make them want for more.

What is second-hand smoking?

Second-hand smoking is when someone who does not smoke lives with a person who smokes, or is in the same room with smokers and breathes the smoke from the cigarettes. This person is called a second hand smoker. This person is also at risk of getting lung and skin cancers. This is because when smoke is inhaled and when smoke touches living cells it damages and causes harm.

Q  I know a girl in our school who is being sexually abused by one of our teachers, is there anything I should do?

A  Yes, you can help the girl by reporting the case to the nearest police station. Children should not be invloved sexually before the age of 18. Engaging children in sexual acts before such an age is punishable by law in countries like Ethiopia. Under such laws a person involved in a sexual relationship with a child can not even make the excuse that the child has given his/ her consent. Therefore anyone abusing a child sexually is punishable by law and any one coming to know of such facts should report to the police immediately.

In addition to reporting the case to the police you could also make attempts to inform the school administration of such fact. This will enable the school administration to take immediate action to stop the specified abuse while at the same time protecting other children in the school from similar abuses.
